ATLANTA – After successfully working together in the 2020 general election, Vote Tripling Action Fund and When We All Vote announced today they are partnering with Fair Count to mobilize voters in Georgia’s Jan. 5 runoff election.
Dedicated to increasing election participation and representation, these three non-profits will implement a new voter turnout program called ‘polling place vote tripling’ in all of Georgia’s 159 counties.
With polling place vote tripling, volunteers stand outside polling places (adhering to legal electioneering requirements) and ask exiting voters to pause and immediately remind three friends to vote. This friend-to-friend voter turnout technique is based on behavioral science research and was used by more than 30 501(c)3 organizations in the 2020 general election.
Polling place vote tripling’s efficacy rests in the large volume of voter contacts it produces. Specifically, research finds it can generate 10-fold more voting conversations than Election Day canvassing. While Election Day canvassers typically only talk to four voters an hour, polling place vote tripling volunteers spark dozens of voter contacts each hour.
“If you ask people to remind 10 friends to vote, they’ll remind zero,” said Robert Reynolds, Executive Director of Vote Tripling Action Fund. “But if you ask them to remind three, they’ll remind three.”
According to Reynolds, the best moment in an election cycle to ask people to reach out to their friends is right after they vote. “People are glowing after voting, and most are delighted to text their friends. And for those ambivalent about reminding friends, there’s a simple solution: We’ve learned that offering a sticker reading ‘I reminded 3 friends to vote’ is a perfect micro-incentive to spark tons of voters to stop and text their peers to vote.”
“We’re pleased to once again offer a volunteer opportunity that’s not only incredibly impactful, but also a lot of fun,” said Bobby Brady-Sharp, National Organizing Director of When We All Vote. “Asking voters outside of polling places to remind their friends to vote is one of the best ways to scale relational organizing: the research-proven most effective type of electoral outreach.
“We’re excited to continue making a difference across all of Georgia,” said Rebecca DeHart, CEO of Fair Count. “Our mission is to make sure every Georgian in every part of the state counts, and this partnership will help voters throughout the state be heard at the polls.”
Early voting began in Georgia on Dec. 14, 2020.
